Music Academy Students Receive National Certification

On April 28th, 2007, two students from The Music Academy participated in a national certification program sponsored by the American String Teacher Association. Mr. Francis Elliott, instructor of strings, proudly presented two of his students with their certificates of achievement. Brittany Wilson is a 14 year old violist who has been at the Academy under Mr. Elliott’s instruction for six years. Luke Olson is six years old, and this was his first year of instruction on the violin. The Certificate for Strings Program seeks to establish definite goals and awards for students of all levels through non-competitive examinations.  Students are judged on technical and musical preparedness at specific levels (Foundation Level- Level 10) by an examiner of musical and pedagogical stature.  A certificate of achievement is awarded for each level successfully completed. See the Certificates Awarded this year by clicking here

This is a service that also helps private teachers assess their students toward goal-oriented achievement. The Certificate Program is a framework for the graded periodic assessment of the string instrument student's technical progress and musical development at a national level. Through the program, students earn Certificates of Achievement as they complete each level of competency. The program is designed to encourage and motivate students, and to recognize their progress. It is open to all students of ASTA members, preschool through adult. This year’s certification was held in Knoxville at the University of Tennessee.

This is the first time Tennessee has offered certification of this type. Some fifty students in east Tennessee received certificates this year. As a courtesy, The Music Academy will be hosting the certification process in the summer of 2008. This will enable more local students to receive certification. It will be open to all area students whose private instructor is an active member of the American String Teacher’s Association. The Music Academy, a non-profit school of music, is currently offering Kindermusik®, piano, Children’s Choir, private voice, violin, and viola in the fall schedule.

The Music Academy is a non-profit school of music, and we need your help in order to insure all students are able to enjoy lessons regardless of their family’s financial status. We do not want to turn anyone away and only a few dollars a week will help children experience a quality musical education. We currently have several students in need of a scholarship to help cover the Academy’s expenses. Will you open your heart and share the joy of music with a child?

Any individual or corporation willing to underwrite any of these programs, sponsor a child, or donate musical instruments is asked to please contact us right away. Be a part of the music education of young people in our area! Thank you to all of our current sponsors.
